Banned Books in the Wine Country
Since 2009 we've gathered annually for a one-day mini-retreat at the Calistoga Spa Hot Springs in the wine country. Calistoga is a lovely small town at the northern end of the Napa Valley, at the foot of Mt. St. Helena. There are many excellent restaurants and delis in town, but no fast food -- it's against the law! For those who wish to extend their wine country stay, we'll send a list of local accommodations when we accept your registration.
The Wine Country Mini-Retreat places an annual focus on a "banned book." On October 7, 2017 we'll read and discuss Richard Wright's Native Son. The story of Bigger Thomas's struggles in an oppressive, racist society has been challenged and removed at least eight times based on objections to its "violent and sexually graphic" content.
Two ways to register:
In previous years at the Wine Country Mini-Retreat, we've enjoyed discussions of the book and film versions of Lord of the Flies, All Quiet on the Western Front, Othello, The Man Who Would be King, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, Catch-22 and A Man for All Seasons.
